What does Proverbs 16:9 mean?

We make our own plans, but it’s God who actually directs where we end up. Proverbs 16:9 - Modern Text Bible

(You can set your goals, but ultimately, God is the one who guides your steps.)

People make their own plans, but the direction their life actually takes is shaped by God. The Hebrew word kun (to establish or direct) means to set firmly or make something stand. This verse claims that while we have the freedom and responsibility to plan, there’s a deeper guidance at work that shapes the outcome. This pushes back on the idea that you’re completely in control of your destiny—or that planning is pointless because everything is random. Instead, it’s a balance: make your plans, but stay open to where life (and God) might lead. If you’re frustrated by unexpected changes or feel like your efforts aren’t paying off, this verse encourages you to keep planning, but also to look for meaning in the twists and turns. Sometimes, the best things happen when you’re willing to adjust your course.
