What does Proverbs 14:23 mean?
Hard work always pays off in some way, but just talking about what you’ll do gets you nowhere. Proverbs 14:23 - Modern Text Bible
(Effort leads to results, but empty talk is useless. Action matters more than intentions or promises.)
Putting in real effort leads to something valuable, but just talking about what you’ll do leaves you with nothing. The Hebrew word for "profit" is motar, meaning surplus or gain—something extra that comes from your work. On the other hand, "mere talk" is saphah, which literally means lips or lip service—empty promises or plans that never become action.
This verse challenges the idea that good intentions or big dreams are enough. In a culture where people often talk about their plans or ambitions, it’s easy to confuse talking with doing. Proverbs 14:23 says that only action brings real change and reward; talking alone just leads to poverty, whether that’s financial, emotional, or relational.
If you’re stuck in a cycle of planning or dreaming but never starting, this verse is a push to take even a small step. Real results come from effort, not just ideas. Whether it’s work, relationships, or personal goals, doing something—no matter how small—moves you forward in a way talk never will.
