What does Proverbs 11:31 mean?

If good people get what they deserve here on earth, how much more will the wicked and the sinner get what’s coming to them? Proverbs 11:31 - Modern Text Bible

(If even the righteous face consequences and rewards in this life, those who do wrong can expect even more certain judgment.)

People who try to live right face consequences and rewards here and now—not just in some future world. The Hebrew word for "repaid" is shalam, meaning to make whole, pay back, or settle accounts. The verse makes a bold claim: if even the upright face real-life outcomes, how much more will those who reject what's right?

This challenges the idea that justice is only about the afterlife. It's counter-cultural because it insists that what you do now matters now. Good and bad choices both have real, tangible results in everyday life, not just in some distant spiritual sense.

If you've ever felt like doing the right thing doesn't matter, this verse says otherwise. Actions have consequences, for better or worse, and you see those results in your relationships, your reputation, and your own sense of peace. The world is wired for cause and effect—what you plant, you harvest.
