What does Proverbs 10:2 mean?

Money you get the wrong way won’t help you in the end, but doing what’s right can actually save your life. Proverbs 10:2 - Modern Text Bible

(Unjust gain is ultimately useless, especially when it comes to what really matters. Living with integrity is what truly protects you.)

Money gained through wrongdoing offers no real safety or lasting benefit. The proverb claims that wealth from injustice is worthless when it matters most, while doing what’s right protects from harm. The Hebrew phrase for "ill-gotten treasures" is otzar resha, meaning a store of wealth built on evil or injustice. "Righteousness" is tsedaqah, which means living justly, with integrity and fairness.

This challenges the belief that success is measured by what you have, no matter how you got it. In a world that often rewards shortcuts and celebrates winners, this verse says: the way you get something matters more than the thing itself. Ancient wisdom insists that justice and honesty outlast quick wins from shady deals.

If you’re tempted to cut corners or think "everyone does it," this verse is a warning. What you build on dishonesty can’t protect you when life falls apart. Real security comes from doing what’s right, even if it’s harder or slower.
