What does Proverbs 1:11 mean?
They might say, 'Come with us! Let's ambush someone and hurt them for no reason.' Proverbs 1:11 - Modern Text Bible
(Some people will try to convince you to join them in doing harm, even when there's no justification.)
Proverbs 1:11 claims that sometimes people will try to pull you into schemes that hurt others, promising quick rewards. The Hebrew phrase let us lie in wait uses the word erev, which means to ambush or set a trap. The verse paints a picture of people plotting violence or harm, and inviting you to join in as if it’s a game or a shortcut to success.
This verse pushes back against the idea that doing whatever it takes to get ahead is okay. It challenges the belief that hurting others for your own benefit is just part of life. Even today, people can be tempted to join in on gossip, cheating, or worse, just because it seems like everyone else is doing it or because it promises a quick payoff.
If you’re ever pressured to take part in something that feels wrong, even if it seems exciting or profitable, this verse says to think twice. The thrill of being part of the group or getting ahead isn’t worth the damage done to others—or to your own character.
