What does Philippians 3:12 mean?

I’m not saying I’ve already made it or that I’m perfect. But I keep chasing after it, hoping to grab hold of what Christ grabbed me for. Philippians 3:12 - Modern Text Bible

(Paul admits he’s still in process, but he’s determined to keep moving forward, just like Jesus intended for him.)

Paul openly admits he hasn’t reached perfection or fully grasped everything he hopes for. The Greek word for "perfect" is teleioō, which means "to complete" or "to finish." Paul is saying he’s still in process, not a finished product. This goes against the pressure to appear like you’ve got it all together. Instead of pretending, Paul is honest about his ongoing struggles and growth. He keeps moving forward, trying to take hold of the life and purpose Jesus has for him—because, as he says, Jesus has already taken hold of him first.

For anyone who feels stuck or not "good enough," this verse is freeing. You don’t have to be perfect to keep going. Progress matters more than perfection. If you’re trying to change, heal, or just get through a tough season, Paul’s example is to keep reaching for what’s ahead, even if you’re not there yet. The journey itself is valuable, and you’re not alone in it.
