What does Philippians 2:6 mean?
Even though he was in God’s own form, he didn’t cling to his status as equal with God or use it for his own advantage. Philippians 2:6 - Modern Text Bible
(Jesus had every right to hold onto his divine status, but he chose not to exploit it.)
Even though Jesus had the same status as God, he didn’t use that to his own advantage. The Greek word for grasped is harpagmos, which means something to be seized or exploited. Instead of clinging to power or privilege, he let go of his rights for the sake of others.
This is deeply counter-cultural, both then and now. The world often says to hold onto every advantage you have and use it for yourself. This verse turns that on its head, showing that real greatness is found in letting go of status and choosing to serve.
If you’ve ever wondered what to do with your own advantages—whether that’s power, influence, or resources—this verse offers a radical example. True leadership and impact come not from grasping for more, but from being willing to give up what you have to lift others up.
