What does Numbers 3:13 mean?

Every firstborn in Israel, human or animal, belongs to me. I claimed them for myself the day I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt. But now, I’ve taken the Levites instead of every firstborn son. Numbers 3:13 - Modern Text Bible
