What does Micah 5:4 mean?

My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned, and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, so you’ll know the Lord does what’s right. Micah 5:4 - Modern Text Bible

(God calls them to remember specific moments when he protected and guided them, even when others tried to harm them. He wants them to see his consistent goodness.)

The coming leader will stand firm and care for his people like a shepherd, providing security and peace. The Hebrew word for "shepherd" is ra‘ah, which means to tend, feed, and protect. The verse says his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth, and people will finally feel safe.

This challenges the idea that power means domination or fear. Instead, leadership is pictured as protection and care—a radical vision in a world where leaders often look out for themselves first. In ancient times, shepherds were seen as humble but essential, responsible for the well-being of their flock.

If you’ve ever longed for someone trustworthy to look out for you, this verse offers that hope. It imagines a kind of leadership that brings peace and security, not by force, but by genuine care. It’s a vision for what real strength can look like in everyday life.
