What does Genesis 47:19 mean?

Why should we die right in front of you, both us and our land? Buy us and our fields for food, and we’ll be your workers. Just give us bread so we and our land don’t waste away. That way, the land won’t be empty and we won’t starve. Genesis 47:19 - Modern Text Bible
