What does Genesis 22:8 mean?
Abraham said, 'God will provide the lamb for the offering, my son.' And they kept walking together. Genesis 22:8 - Modern Text Bible
(Abraham trusts that God will make a way, even though he doesn't know how. He reassures Isaac with faith.)
Abraham answers Isaac’s question by saying that God will provide the lamb for the offering. The phrase "God will provide" uses the Hebrew word yireh (from which we get "Jehovah Jireh"), meaning "to see" or "to provide." Abraham isn’t just dodging Isaac’s question; he’s expressing a radical trust that even when he can’t see the solution, God somehow already sees it.
This moment pushes back against the idea that faith is about certainty or having all the answers. Abraham doesn’t know how things will work out, but he chooses to trust that something beyond his control is at work. In a world that prizes control and planning, this is a deeply counter-cultural move—admitting you don’t know, but hoping for provision anyway.
If you’ve ever faced a situation where you had no idea how things would turn out, Abraham’s words offer a way to move forward: sometimes, you just keep walking, trusting that the answer will show up when you need it most—even if you can’t see it yet.
