What does Genesis 17:10 mean?

You must circumcise every male, including those born in your house or bought as slaves, whether they're your own children or not. Genesis 17:10 - Modern Text Bible

(The sign of the promise isn't just for Abraham's direct family, but for everyone in his household.)

Circumcision is introduced as the physical sign of the covenant between God and Abraham’s family. The Hebrew word for “sign” is ot, meaning a mark or symbol that points to something deeper. This act was meant to be a permanent reminder, carried in the body, that set Abraham’s descendants apart.

This idea is counter-cultural both then and now. In Abraham’s world, religious commitments were usually marked by rituals or objects, not by a permanent change to the body. God is asking for something deeply personal and physical—a sign that can’t be removed or hidden. It’s a way of saying that faith isn’t just about beliefs or words, but about something that shapes your identity at the most basic level.

For someone today, this verse raises questions about what it means to belong or to be set apart. Are there things you do or ways you live that make your commitments visible, not just to others, but to yourself? Sometimes the most important promises are the ones you carry with you, even when no one else can see them.
