What does Ephesians 2:5 mean?

even when we were dead in our mess, he brought us back to life together with the Messiah. It’s only because of his kindness that you’re saved. Ephesians 2:5 - Modern Text Bible

(God didn’t wait for us to fix ourselves. He gave us new life through Jesus, and it’s all a gift, not something we earned.)

Even when people feel completely lost or "dead" inside, it's possible to experience a new kind of life. This verse says that God makes people alive together with Christ, even when they're stuck in patterns that feel hopeless. The Greek word sunezóopoiesen means "made alive together with"—it's not just about being rescued, but about sharing in a new existence. The phrase "by grace you have been saved" uses the word charis for "grace," meaning a gift you can't earn or pay back.

This idea goes against the belief that you have to fix yourself before you can change, or that only the strong or the good get a fresh start. Instead, it says that new life is possible even when you feel numb, stuck, or beyond hope. It's not about self-improvement or willpower, but about something given freely, without conditions.

If you've ever felt like you're just going through the motions, or like nothing will ever change, this verse offers a radical alternative. It says that you don't have to stay trapped in old patterns or regrets. New life isn't something you achieve—it's something you receive, even when you feel least deserving.
