What does Ephesians 2:18 mean?

Now, through him, we all have access to the Father by the same Spirit. Ephesians 2:18 - Modern Text Bible

(Because of Jesus, everyone can come to God, no matter their background, through the Spirit.)

Everyone, regardless of background, is given direct access to God through what Jesus did and by the same Spirit. The Greek word for “access” is prosagōgē, which means having the right or freedom to approach someone important—like being welcomed into a throne room, not as a stranger but as someone with permission to be there.

This verse pushes against the idea that only certain people—priests, holy people, or insiders—can talk to God, or that you need to jump through hoops to be heard. In both ancient and modern times, access to power is usually restricted. Ephesians 2:18 claims that the door is wide open to anyone, and you don’t need a special pass.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re not good enough to reach out for help, or that you need to go through someone else to be heard, this verse says you have the right to approach directly. It’s about being welcomed, not kept at arm’s length.
