What does Ephesians 2:15 mean?
by setting aside the rules and commands that separated us. He created a new kind of humanity in himself, making peace between us. Ephesians 2:15 - Modern Text Bible
(Jesus did away with the old divisions, creating a new community where everyone is united.)
Jesus is said to have set aside old laws and rules that separated people, making it possible to create a new kind of human community. The Greek word for “abolished” is katargēsas, meaning to make something powerless or irrelevant. The “law of commandments” refers to the complex system of religious rules that kept people apart. Instead, the goal is “one new humanity” (heis kainos anthrōpos), something totally different from what came before.
This verse challenges the belief that identity must be built on keeping rules or belonging to a certain group. In ancient times, religious laws were a boundary—keeping insiders in and outsiders out. Ephesians 2:15 claims those boundaries have been dismantled, and a new way of being human is possible, one that isn’t defined by old divisions.
If you’re tired of being measured by standards you never agreed to, or feeling like you’ll never fit into someone else’s system, this verse offers a different vision. It suggests that belonging and identity can be based on something deeper than rules or heritage—a new way of being human, open to anyone.
