What does Ephesians 2:13 mean?

But now, because you’re connected to the Messiah Jesus, you who used to be far away have been brought close by what he did for you. Ephesians 2:13 - Modern Text Bible

(Now, through Jesus, those who were once outsiders are welcomed in and brought near to God.)

People who once felt far away from God are now welcomed in, according to Ephesians 2:13. The distance is closed not by effort or heritage, but through what Jesus did. The Greek word for “brought near” is ēgenēthēte engys, which means to be drawn close or included, especially after being far off. This is a radical shift from being outsiders to being insiders—not through anything you did, but through someone else’s action.

This verse challenges the idea that you have to earn your way into belonging or fix yourself before you can be accepted. In both ancient and modern cultures, there’s pressure to prove you’re worthy. Ephesians 2:13 flips that: closeness isn’t about your background or performance; it’s about being welcomed because of someone else’s initiative.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re too far gone, or that your past disqualifies you from anything good, this verse offers a different story. It says you can be brought close, no matter where you started. That kind of inclusion is rare and powerful, and it means you don’t have to stay on the outside forever.
