What does 2 Samuel 23:13 mean?

Once, during harvest season, three of the thirty chief warriors went down to David at the cave of Adullam. The Philistine army was camped in the Valley of Rephaim. 2 Samuel 23:13 - Modern Text Bible

(This sets up a story about a daring act by three of David's best men, while David was hiding from the Philistines.)

Three of David’s top warriors went down to join him during harvest, even though the Philistines’ army was camped nearby. The Hebrew word shalosh (שָׁלוֹשׁ) means “three,” and it’s a way of highlighting the unity and bravery of this small group. This story pushes back against the idea that safety is always the highest value. Sometimes, loyalty and friendship mean taking risks together, even when the odds are against you. If you’ve ever been afraid to step up for someone you care about because it seemed dangerous or inconvenient, this verse shows that real friendship can require courage. The bonds you form in hard times can last a lifetime.
