What does 2 Samuel 22:46 mean?

They lose heart and come trembling out of their strongholds. 2 Samuel 22:46 - Modern Text Bible

(David’s enemies are so intimidated that they surrender without a fight.)

Foreigners lose their courage and come trembling out of their hiding places. The Hebrew word for “lose heart” is nabel (נָבֵל), which means to wither or fade away. These outsiders, once confident in their defenses, now come out with fear, no longer able to stand strong.

This verse pushes back against the belief that those who seem powerful or untouchable will always stay that way. In the ancient world, strongholds were seen as impenetrable. But here, even the most secure people are shaken and forced to confront reality.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated by someone else’s confidence or position, this verse reminds you that appearances can be deceiving. Everyone has moments of vulnerability, and sometimes, the things that look strongest are actually the most fragile. Courage can fade, and the walls people hide behind don’t last forever. It’s a call to see through the surface and recognize that fear and uncertainty are universal, no matter how things look from the outside.
