What does 2 Samuel 20:9 mean?

Joab said to Amasa, 'How are you, my brother?' and grabbed Amasa’s beard with his right hand as if to greet him with a kiss. 2 Samuel 20:9 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab greets Amasa in a friendly way, but his gesture is deceptive, hiding his true intentions.)

Joab greeted Amasa with a warm question—asking if he was well and calling him “my brother.” But this friendly approach hid Joab’s real intentions. The Hebrew phrase for “Are you well?” is ha-shalom ata, literally “Is it peace with you?”—a standard greeting, but here it’s loaded with irony because Joab is about to betray him.

This verse pushes back on the idea that words always match reality. Sometimes, people use kindness or familiarity to cover up what they’re really planning. In ancient times, as now, trust can be weaponized by those who want something else entirely.

When someone’s actions don’t match their words, it’s okay to pause and look closer. Real trust is built on consistency, not just friendly talk. If you’ve ever felt uneasy about someone’s motives despite their words, you’re not alone—this story shows that gut feelings can be right.
