What does 2 Samuel 20:21 mean?
There's a man named Sheba, son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim. He's rebelled against King David. If you hand him over, I'll leave your city alone.' The woman said, 'His head will be thrown over the wall to you.' 2 Samuel 20:21 - Modern Text Bible
(Joab explains he's only after Sheba, the rebel leader. The woman promises to deliver Sheba to save her city.)
Joab explains that he only wants Sheba, the rebel, handed over. If the city gives up the guilty party, everyone else will be spared. The Hebrew term ish ben-beliyaal (worthless man) is used for Sheba, marking him as the true threat. This verse pushes back on the idea that justice means punishing everyone for one person’s crime. Joab’s demand is specific—he wants accountability, not collateral damage. If you’ve ever worried about being caught up in someone else’s mess, or wondered if fairness is possible in a broken system, this story says that targeted justice is both ancient and possible. It’s a call to separate guilt from innocence, and to seek solutions that don’t destroy the innocent along with the guilty.
