What does 2 Samuel 20:11 mean?

One of Joab’s men stood by Amasa’s body and shouted, 'If you’re loyal to Joab and David, follow Joab!' 2 Samuel 20:11 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab’s men rally the troops, making it clear that Joab is now in charge and urging everyone to keep moving.)

After Amasa’s death, one of Joab’s men stood by the body and called out to the troops, urging everyone loyal to David to follow Joab. The Hebrew word for “follow” here is achar, meaning to go after or pursue—implying not just physical movement but a shift in allegiance. The call was clear: loyalty now belonged to Joab, not Amasa.

This verse pushes back against the idea that leadership is always stable or earned by merit. Sometimes, power passes through violence or force, and people have to decide quickly whom to follow. In ancient times, as now, loyalty can be complicated and sometimes demanded rather than given.

When things fall apart—at work, in groups, or in families—people often look for someone to follow. But it’s worth asking: is this loyalty chosen, or just the only option left? Moments of crisis reveal who really leads, and sometimes, who’s just in charge because no one else is left.
