What does 2 Samuel 2:7 mean?

'Now be strong and brave, because your master Saul is dead, and the people of Judah have made me their king.' 2 Samuel 2:7 - Modern Text Bible

(David encourages them to stay strong and lets them know he is now king over Judah.)

David tells the people to be strong and brave now that Saul is gone and he has been anointed king by Judah. The Hebrew phrase for "be strong" is chizku, and "be brave" is vehayu l'vnei chayil, meaning to act with courage or valor. David is not just asking them to move on—he's calling them to step into a new future, even though it's uncertain and their old leader is gone.

This verse is counter-cultural because it doesn't minimize grief or pretend that change is easy. Instead, it acknowledges the pain of loss but insists that courage is possible and necessary. In a world that often avoids hard feelings or expects people to "just get over it," David offers a more honest and hopeful path forward.

If you're facing a big change or feeling lost after something ends, this verse is for you. It doesn't ask you to forget what happened, but to find strength and take action anyway. Courage isn't the absence of fear—it's moving forward even when things are hard.
