What does 2 Samuel 2:24 mean?

Joab and Abishai kept chasing Abner. By sunset, they reached the hill of Ammah, near Giah, on the way to the desert of Gibeon. 2 Samuel 2:24 - Modern Text Bible

(Asahel's brothers keep up the pursuit, driven by anger and grief.)

Joab and Abishai, Asahel’s brothers, chase after Abner after Asahel is killed. The pursuit continues, now fueled by grief and the need for justice or revenge. The Hebrew word for "pursued" is again radaph, highlighting relentless pursuit driven by emotion. The chase leads them to the hill of Ammah, a specific place that marks a turning point in the conflict.

This verse pushes back against the idea that violence ends with one person. Instead, it spreads, drawing in others and deepening the cycle. The pain of loss becomes a new motivation, and the conflict escalates.

If you’ve ever seen how one hurt can ripple through a family or community, you know this pattern. When something tragic happens, it’s tempting to respond with more action, more pursuit. But sometimes, chasing after what hurt you only leads to more pain. The cycle only breaks when someone decides to stop running after revenge.
