What does 2 Samuel 18:27 mean?
The watchman said, 'The first one runs like Ahimaaz, son of Zadok.' The king replied, 'He's a good man. He must be bringing good news.' 2 Samuel 18:27 - Modern Text Bible
(David recognizes Ahimaaz as trustworthy and assumes his arrival means something positive.)
The watchman recognizes Ahimaaz by the way he runs, even before he arrives. The Hebrew phrase ka'ashir rutz (כַּאֲשֶׁר רָץ), “as he runs,” highlights that people can be identified by their unique actions. David responds, trusting that Ahimaaz brings good news, based on his character.
This goes against the idea that identity is only about names or titles. Sometimes, it’s your habits, your style, or your energy that people remember. Even at a distance, who you are comes through in how you move through the world.
If you’ve ever been recognized by your walk, your voice, or the way you do things, you know this feeling. Your actions speak for you, often before you even say a word.
