What does 2 Samuel 17:14 mean?
Absalom and all the men of Israel said, 'Hushai's advice is better than Ahithophel's.' The Lord had decided to defeat Ahithophel's good plan, so He could bring disaster on Absalom. 2 Samuel 17:14 - Modern Text Bible
(They choose Hushai's plan, but the real reason is that God is working behind the scenes to protect David and bring down Absalom.)
Even the smartest advice can fail if something bigger is at work. This verse claims that the counsel of Ahithophel, though wise, was set aside so that disaster would come to Absalom. The Hebrew verb parar (פָּרַר) means to frustrate, break, or nullify—here, it’s God actively overturning the plans of the wise.
This is counter-cultural because it challenges the idea that human intelligence or strategy is always enough. Sometimes, even the best-laid plans collapse for reasons no one can explain or control. The verse suggests that there are limits to what we can plan for, and that outcomes are not always in our hands.
For anyone who has watched a perfect plan fall apart, this verse offers a strange comfort: failure isn’t always your fault. Sometimes, things just don’t work out, no matter how hard you try. It’s a reminder to stay humble, and to recognize that not everything is within your control.
