What does 2 Samuel 16:4 mean?

The king said to Ziba, 'Everything that belonged to Mephibosheth is now yours.' Ziba said, 'Thank you, my king. I hope I always find favor with you.' 2 Samuel 16:4 - Modern Text Bible

(David, believing Ziba's story, gives him all of Mephibosheth's property. Ziba is grateful, but his motives are questionable.)

David, hearing Ziba’s story, immediately gives all of Mephibosheth’s property to Ziba. This is a massive reward, granted on the spot, without investigation. The Hebrew word for "give" here is natan, which means to hand over or bestow—often with authority. In the ancient world, kings had the power to redistribute land and wealth in an instant, but such decisions could be hasty or unfair. This verse pushes back against the idea that justice is always careful or slow. Sometimes, in crisis, leaders act quickly and people’s lives change overnight. For anyone who’s ever felt the sting of a snap judgment, or benefited from someone else’s misfortune, this moment is a reminder: life isn’t always fair, and the truth can get lost in the rush. If you’re on the receiving end of a sudden change—good or bad—pause before assuming it’s the whole story. What seems like a reward or punishment might not last forever.
