What does 2 Samuel 16:19 mean?
'Besides, who should I serve? Shouldn’t I serve the king’s son? Just as I served your father, I’ll serve you.' 2 Samuel 16:19 - Modern Text Bible
(Hushai continues his act, saying it makes sense to serve the new king’s son, just as he served David.)
Hushai tells Absalom that he will serve him just as he served David before. The Hebrew word for "serve" is avad, which means to work for or be devoted to someone. Hushai is using language of loyalty and continuity, but underneath, his true allegiance is still with David.
This verse challenges the idea that loyalty never changes. In real life, people sometimes have to adapt to new leaders or circumstances, even if their hearts are elsewhere. Hushai’s words are both a survival tactic and a way to stay close to the center of power, possibly to help David in the long run.
If you’ve ever had to work for someone you didn’t fully support, or keep your true feelings hidden for practical reasons, this verse shows that you’re not alone. Sometimes, doing what’s necessary in the moment is the only way to protect yourself or those you care about.
