What does 2 Samuel 15:27 mean?
The king said to Zadok the priest, 'Listen, go back to the city in peace, you and your son Ahimaaz, and Abiathar and his son Jonathan. I’ll wait at the river crossings in the wilderness until I hear from you.' 2 Samuel 15:27 - Modern Text Bible
(David sets up a way to get news from Jerusalem, using the priests and their sons as messengers.)
David tells Zadok the priest to return to the city with his son and Ahimaaz, hinting that he’ll need information from inside Jerusalem. The Hebrew word for “seer” is ro’eh, meaning someone who sees or understands, often used for prophets. Here, David is asking Zadok to be his observer, someone who can report what’s happening while David is in exile.
This verse challenges the idea that faith means passivity or ignoring practical realities. David is deeply spiritual, but he’s also strategic—he trusts God, but he also makes plans and gathers information. It’s a blend of hope and realism that’s often missing from both religious and secular thinking.
If you’ve ever struggled to balance trust and action, David’s approach offers a way forward. You don’t have to choose between hoping for the best and preparing for reality. Sometimes, the wisest path is to do both: trust what you can’t control, but also take practical steps to deal with what you can.
