What does 2 Samuel 15:18 mean?

All his officials marched past him, along with the Kerethites, Pelethites, and the six hundred men from Gath who had followed him from there. 2 Samuel 15:18 - Modern Text Bible

(David’s loyal guards and foreign mercenaries stick with him, showing his leadership still inspires loyalty.)

David is accompanied by his bodyguards—the Kerethites, Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who followed him from Gath. These aren’t Israelites, but foreigners who have chosen to stand with David. The Hebrew for "Gittites" is Gitti, meaning people from Gath, a Philistine city. Their loyalty is striking because it comes from outsiders, not family or fellow citizens.

This verse challenges the assumption that support only comes from those who look like us or share our background. Sometimes, the most faithful friends are the ones you’d least expect.

If you’ve ever been surprised by who showed up for you in a crisis, this verse will resonate. It’s a reminder that real loyalty isn’t about where you’re from, but what you choose when things get tough. Sometimes, your strongest allies are the ones who made a conscious decision to be there for you, no matter the cost.
