What does 2 Samuel 10:14 mean?

When the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they also ran away from Abishai and retreated into their city. So Joab stopped fighting the Ammonites and went back to Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 10:14 - Modern Text Bible

(With their allies gone, the Ammonites lose their nerve and retreat. Joab doesn’t pursue them further.)

When the Ammonites saw their Aramean allies fleeing, they ran away too, retreating into their city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem. The Hebrew word for "fled" is nus, which means to bolt or escape quickly, driven by fear. This moment exposes how quickly courage can collapse when support disappears.

This verse pushes against the belief that strength is only about numbers or alliances. When fear spreads, even large groups can fall apart. The Ammonites' confidence was tied to their allies, and when those allies failed, so did their resolve.

It’s a real-life truth: sometimes, when those you depend on give up, you might feel like quitting too. This verse is a reminder that borrowed confidence is fragile. Finding your own reasons to stand firm matters, especially when others let go.
