What does 2 Samuel 10:12 mean?

'Be strong and let’s be brave for our people and for the cities of our God. May the Lord do what he thinks is best.' 2 Samuel 10:12 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab encourages courage and trust in God, knowing the outcome is ultimately in God’s hands.)

Joab urged his brother and the troops to be strong and courageous, to fight for their people and the cities they cared about. Then he said, whatever happens, let the Lord do what He thinks is best. The Hebrew phrase for "be strong" is chazaq, which means to seize courage, to take hold of inner strength. "Courageous" is amatz, meaning to be bold or determined.

This is not a pep talk about guaranteed victory. Joab admits he can't control the outcome. He calls for bravery and for doing what’s right, even when the end result is uncertain. That’s a counter-cultural message in a world obsessed with winning and controlling every detail.

When you face something hard—a tough conversation, a big decision, or a personal loss—this verse speaks to you. It’s about stepping up, doing your part, and accepting that you can’t control everything. Sometimes, the bravest thing is to act with integrity and let go of the rest.
