What does 1 Peter 1:8 mean?

You love him even though you haven’t seen him. You trust him now, and you’re filled with a joy that’s beyond words, full of glory. 1 Peter 1:8 - Modern Text Bible

(Peter marvels at their deep love and trust in Jesus, even without having seen him in person.)

It’s possible to love and trust someone you’ve never seen, and to experience a joy that words can’t fully explain. The Greek word for "inexpressible" is aneklaletos, meaning a joy so deep it goes beyond what language can capture. This verse describes a relationship built on trust, not on physical evidence or proof.

This pushes back on the idea that "seeing is believing" is the only way to know what’s real. It says that some of the most important things—love, hope, joy—are experienced without needing to see them first. Faith isn’t blind; it’s a different way of knowing and connecting.

If you’ve ever struggled to believe in what you can’t see, this verse says you’re not alone. It invites you to consider that some of life’s deepest experiences can’t be measured or explained, but they’re no less real.
