What does 1 John 4:17 mean?

This is how love reaches its goal with us: so we can be confident on the day when everything is judged, because in this world, we’re living like Jesus did. 1 John 4:17 - Modern Text Bible

(When love is fully grown in us, we don’t have to be afraid of judgment. We can be bold, because our lives reflect Jesus’ way of living.)

Love reaching its full expression in us gives us confidence for the day when everything will be judged. The Greek word for “confidence” is parrēsia, meaning boldness or freedom to speak openly. The idea is that living in love now means you don’t have to be afraid of future judgment—because your life already reflects the kind of love Jesus showed.

This verse pushes back on the fear-based approach to spirituality, where people worry about whether they’ll measure up when it matters most. In both ancient and modern times, fear of judgment has driven people to anxiety or despair. Here, the claim is that love—not fear—is what prepares you to face whatever comes, even the ultimate test.

If you’ve ever worried about being good enough, or about what happens when your life is evaluated, this verse offers a different path. It’s not about perfection, but about letting love shape your actions and character. That kind of life gives you the freedom to face the future without fear—because you know you’re living in the same kind of love that defined Jesus himself.
