What does 1 John 4:10 mean?

This is what love really looks like: not that we loved God, but that He loved us first and sent His Son to take away our sins. 1 John 4:10 - Modern Text Bible

(Real love starts with God, not us. He took the initiative, sending Jesus to deal with our brokenness and restore us.)

Real love isn’t about us loving God first—it’s about God loving us and taking action to fix what was broken. The verse says God sent his Son as a sacrifice to deal with everything that separates us from him. The Greek word for “sacrifice” here is hilasmos, which means an atoning sacrifice—something that removes guilt and restores relationship.

This is counter-cultural both then and now. Most religions and philosophies say you have to earn your way to God or prove your worth. Here, love starts with God making the first move, even when people didn’t deserve it or weren’t looking for it. It’s a love that takes the initiative, even when the other person is distant or uninterested.

For anyone who feels like they have to clean up their act before they can be loved—or who’s tired of one-sided relationships—this verse offers a different picture. It says real love isn’t about waiting for someone to deserve it. It’s about choosing to act for their good, even when it costs you something. That’s the kind of love God shows, and it’s the kind of love that can change even the most broken relationships.
