What does 1 John 2:13 mean?

I’m writing to you, parents, because you know the one who’s been there from the beginning. I’m writing to you, young people, because you’ve overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:13 - Modern Text Bible

(He speaks to different groups: the spiritually mature ('parents') who know God deeply, and the 'young people' who have resisted evil.)

Every stage of life can connect with something eternal. This verse addresses children, parents, and young people, recognizing that each group knows or has overcome something significant. The phrase for knowing God uses the Greek word egnōkate, meaning a deep, personal knowledge—not just facts, but real relationship. For young people, the verse says they have conquered the evil one, using nenikēkate—to win a decisive victory.

What’s surprising here is the radical inclusivity: spiritual depth isn’t reserved for the old or wise. Kids, parents, and young adults all have a place. This pushes back on the idea that spiritual experience is only for a certain type of person or age group.

If you’ve ever felt like you don’t fit the mold or aren’t “spiritual enough,” this verse says your stage of life doesn’t disqualify you. Whatever your background, you can have a real connection with what’s ultimate, and your struggles and victories matter.
