What does 1 John 1:9 mean?

But if we admit our wrongs, he’s faithful and fair—he’ll forgive us and clean us up from everything that’s not right. 1 John 1:9 - Modern Text Bible

(Confessing honestly leads to forgiveness and a fresh start, because God can be trusted to do what’s right.)

Being honest about your mistakes—confessing them—opens the door to forgiveness and being made clean. The Greek word for "confess" is homologeō, meaning "to say the same thing," or to agree with the truth about yourself. John says that when you do this, you can count on being forgiven and cleansed from everything that's wrong—not just covered up, but actually made right.

This is radically different from a world that often shames or punishes failure. John is saying that the way forward isn't denial or hiding, but honesty. The promise isn't just that you'll be let off the hook, but that you'll be made clean—restored to wholeness.

If you've ever carried guilt or felt stuck by things you wish you could undo, this verse offers a way out. It isn't about earning forgiveness, but about stepping into the light and letting the truth do its work. The process starts with simply admitting what's real—no excuses, no spin. That's where real freedom and healing begin.
