What does 1 John 1:5 mean?

Here’s the message we heard from him and now pass on to you: God is light—there’s not a bit of darkness in him. 1 John 1:5 - Modern Text Bible

(John sums up Jesus’ message: God is completely good and pure, with no evil or deceit at all.)

God is described as pure light, with no darkness at all. In Greek, the word for light is phōs, which means not just visible light but also clarity, truth, and goodness. Darkness (skotia) represents everything hidden, corrupt, or harmful. John is making a bold claim: God is completely transparent, trustworthy, and good—there's nothing lurking in the shadows.

This pushes back against the suspicion that ultimate reality is mixed, unpredictable, or has a dark side. In ancient times, many gods were seen as moody or dangerous. Even today, people often wonder if the universe is really on their side or if there's some catch. John says the opposite—there is no hidden darkness in God at all.

For someone who has been let down by people or systems that promised good but delivered harm, this verse is a radical statement. It suggests that if there is a God, that God is not playing games or hiding motives. The challenge is to imagine a reality where the deepest truth is pure, open, and trustworthy—something you can walk toward without fear of being tricked or betrayed.
