Sixty-six books, read as one connected account, from the first page to the last.
- PART ONE The world as it was meant to be God makes a world, calls it good, and places people in it to care for it on his behalf. Nothing in the account is grudging, and the verdict repeated over each stage of it is that it is good.
- BUT the people entrusted with it decide they would rather set the terms themselves
- PART TWO What we broke One decision to distrust God spreads outward until it has reached every relationship there is: between people and God, between each other, and with the ground itself.
- SO God begins the repair, and begins it with one family
- PART THREE The promise, and the long wait God binds himself by oath to one childless couple: a land, descendants, and a blessing that will reach every nation on earth. Then two thousand years pass in which the promise is neither fulfilled nor withdrawn.
- UNTIL the one the promise pointed to arrives in person
- PART FOUR God comes in person The promise arrives as a man, born in an occupied province and raised in a village of a few hundred people. He is recognized by very few, executed within three years, and raised from the dead.
- THEREFORE the people who saw him alive afterward cannot keep it to themselves
- PART FIVE The news goes out Within a single generation, a claim made by a handful of people in one occupied city has reached the capital of the empire, carried for the most part by people with no standing at all.
- UNTIL what was promised at the beginning is finally delivered
- PART SIX All things made new The world is put right, permanently. The last two chapters of the Bible answer the first two point for point, and the garden reappears as a city with God living in it.
